Professional excursion of Prekmurje winegrowers to the Kristinus wine estate 🚜

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Prekmurje Model Farm organized a professional excursion for members of winegrowing societies in the Prekmurje region. This time, the model farm chose the very special Kristinus wine estate, located in Hungary, not far from Keszthely, in the town called Kethely. The purpose of the visit was to provide winegrowers with an insight into “different” kind of wine production.

The Kristinus wine estate is known for its biodynamic methodology of grape production and wine maturation in clay amphorae. Their philosophy is based on the belief that healthy soil is key to growing healthy grapes. By using biodynamic preparations and preserving soil life, the estate ensures that the vine is able to bear quality fruit. In addition to vineyards, the property also has cows, sheep and chickens, which help naturally maintain the 60 hectares of vineyards.

The participants of the excursion had the opportunity of a truly comprehensive guided tour of the farm, which included a professional lecture on biodynamics and practices at the Kristinus estate. They also received a tasting of seven types of wine at lunch, which was served in the restaurant Lokal 47. The restaurant takes great pride in sourcing all their basic ingredients from local providers within a 47-kilometer radius.

During the tasting, winegrowers tasted wines such as Analog 2021, Kelet 2021, Siller 2022, Holistic Blaufränkisch 2020, and others.  The excursion was an exceptional opportunity to learn about the novelties in viticulture and examples of good practice that really work.

Biodynamics and Demeter Certification

Biodynamic production is based on the concept that the farm is a living organism where all parts – soil, plants, animals and people – are interconnected and cooperate harmoniously. This method involves the use of special biodynamic preparations that improve soil fertility and plant health.  Special attention is also paid to the lunar cycles and cosmic influences that are supposed to affect plant growth.

The Demeter certificate is an internationally recognized certificate for biodynamic crops and products. Holders of this certificate must comply with strict rules and standards that ensure sustainable and organic production. Obtaining the Demeter certificate means that the farm is committed to high standards of quality and sustainability, which further confirms the quality and ecological value of their products.

The Prekmurje Model Farm strives to provide as many visits as possible to examples of good practice that enable domestic winegrowers to see novelties and successful practices in viticulture.
