A glimpse into successful agriculture: a professional excursion to Csókakő and Ete 🚎

On June 25, 2024, the Prekmurje Model Farm organized an interesting professional excursion in Csókakő and Ete, Hungary, intended primarily for farmers and winegrowers. In Csókakő, we visited a family that breeds 50 heads of dairy cows and a large number of bulls. They process milk into cheese and cottage cheese at home and sell it directly to customers. The whole family takes care of the animals, as this is their main source of income. After a rich banquet, we visited the local mansion and learned a lot of interesting things about its history. The Csókakő mansion, which rises above the village, dates back to the 13th century and is known for its stormy past and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The village of Csókakő is also known for its vineyards and hospitable locals who offer visitors an insight into the rich cultural heritage of the area.

In the town of Ete, we visited the family stable, where they breed ca. 50 horses, specifically ponies and race horses. Working with horses is the main source of income for the family. After visiting the stables, we enjoyed a homemade lunch made from local ingredients. We continued with a tour of the estate, where 1100 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows are raised. The entire estate is robotized and employs 40 people, mostly for the care of meadows and fields. We looked at the process of milking and the calves, as well as the robotization of the farm.

We also visited a family that grows dairy cows to process milk into different types of cheese. We enjoyed a rich cheese tasting with different flavors such as lavender, tarragon, red onion and red pepper, and many more. Each tasting and lunch was accompanied by a tasting of local wine, as we were in the wine-growing district.

The excursion gave us an insight into agriculture, especially into how even a small farmer can successfully market his home-made products. We looked at various family and private estates, which showed us that agriculture today, despite modern challenges, can remain successful and profitable if it is supported by innovation and dedication.
