BLOGDestillation in Prekmurje

November 29, 2024

Distilling is a long-standing tradition associated with Prekmurje. It typically takes place in late autumn or winter. Once the autumn work on the farms was finished and the harvest was stored, they began distilling spirits. This process is not merely technical but a craft that combines knowledge, skill, and creativity.

The History of Distilling

Distilling involves heating fermented materials such as grains, fruit, or roots to separate the alcoholic vapours from other substances through a process known as distillation. This ancient practice dates back to early times when people first began exploring ways to transform natural ingredients into alcoholic beverages. One of the most fascinating aspects of distilling is its diversity. Around the world, countless traditional recipes and methods reflect local cultures, environments, and the availability of ingredients. For instance, France produces cognac from grapes, while South America distills tequila from agave. Each region thus offers its unique flavours and characteristics. In Prekmurje, a region known for its fertile soil and favourable climate, the local plum brandy (slivovka), made from local plums, is particularly famous. Distillation here also includes fruits such as apples, pears, and cherries, which are closely tied to local culture and provide distinctive flavours.

Distilling at the Prekmurje Model Farm

At the Prekmurje Model Farm’s dislocated unit in Krplivnik, where distilling has been a long-standing tradition, we have a modern distillery equipped with a contemporary still. This still not only helps to maintain the tradition of distilling but also offers visitors an insight into this ancient craft. In the ethnographic house, we showcase a range of tools and equipment used in the distilling process. These displays offer visitors an insight into the traditional rural practices of the region and highlight our dedication to preserving this valuable heritage.

Responsible Consumption

It is crucial to emphasize responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. To ensure the safety and quality of products, adherence to regulations regarding the production and sale of alcoholic drinks is essential. Distilling is not just a craft but an expression of local culture. This skill not only helps to preserve cultural heritage but also stimulates creativity and creates connections through distinctive flavours. Visit us to experience how exceptional flavours emerge from the blend of old traditions and modern techniques, reflecting the true essence of Prekmurje.
