Bees are among the most important creatures on our planet. They are crucial to ecosystems worldwide as they pollinate plants, directly impacting our food security and the variety of crops we rely on. Bees are famous for their remarkable ability to produce honey, which is not only a delightful treat but also a natural remedy with various health benefits.
Bees as Pollinators
Bees are essential for the pollination of many plants, especially fruit trees such as apples, peaches, pears, and cherries. Their reward for this vital work is nectar and pollen, which are crucial for their development and survival. Among all pollinators, bees are the most efficient and irreplaceable.
To guarantee successful pollination of orchards, it is necessary to have a specific number of bee colonies per hectare. For intensive apple cultivation, 3-4 colonies per hectare are required, while for effective pollination of cucumbers, buckwheat, and sunflowers, up to 10 bee colonies per hectare may be necessary. Insufficient pollination results in a high number of deformed fruits. This impacts not only the quantity but also the quality of the yield. Organized transport of bees to agricultural fields can increase the yield by 40% or more, highlighting the exceptional importance of bees in agriculture.
Bees play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity by facilitating the survival and reproduction of numerous plant species. In Slovenia, where more than 22,000 species of organisms thrive, bees are essential for maintaining the natural balance.
The Alvarium Ethnographic House
A central part of beekeeping on our farm is the Alvarium unit in Motvarjevci, dedicated to promoting bees, beekeeping, and honey production. The Alvarium enhances the rich experience of visitors to the farm and plays a key role in preserving local heritage and sustainable practices.
Visitors can view various beekeeping artifacts that reflect the rich history of beekeeping in Prekmurje. On the property’s grounds, there is an educational trail where one can learn about the life of bees and beekeeping techniques. In 2023, we set up a modern apiary with 12 hives in the orchard behind the house. This allows us to produce honey while providing visitors with a practical example of beekeeping.
Alvarium plays an important role in connecting local producers, schools, and communities. Its establishment encourages local beekeeping and links young people with traditional craft skills, motivating them to engage in beekeeping.
Through our efforts, we aim to emphasize the importance of bees for a sustainable future. In today’s world, where we face challenges such as climate change and declining biodiversity, preserving bees is more crucial than ever. By educating the public about the significance of bees and beekeeping, we strive to raise awareness and highlight the necessity of their protection.
