BLOGFrom Farm to Table – Local Sustainable Food Supply

January 23, 2025

In today’s world, more and more people are recognizing the importance of local food. Locally grown food is not onlyfresher and more nutritious but also has a smaller carbon footprint since it travels a shorter distance from the farm to the table. This method helps preserve more vitamins and minerals that can be lost during long transportation and supports local farmers, contributing to the sustainable development of our region. Consuming local food strengthens our sense of community by connecting us with local producers and the culture of our area. Opting for locally produced food provides access to seasonal crops that have matured naturally and without artificial chemicals. These foods can be purchased at markets or directly from producers. Buying locally helps preserve agricultural land and supports local farmers.

Connecting Local Producers

In Slovenia, local sustainable food supply is encouraged through various means, including farmers’ markets, localcooperatives, and short food supply chains. Growing awareness of this issue is reflected in the increased consumer interest in seasonal and locally grown food. To effectively deliver food to consumers, it’s crucial to establish strong connections among local producers. Establishing cooperatives or participating in existing agricultural organizations allows producers to pool resources, increase production capacities, and connect with larger buyers, such as public institutions. Collaborating with the public sector ensures a consistent supply of local food to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other public institutions. Public institutions benefit from such partnerships by offering high-quality food to their users while also supporting the local economy. In collaborations between local producers and public institutions, quality and reliability are crucial for long-term success. Producers must ensure their products are always fresh and delivered on time. Quality certifications can further build public trust in their products.

A Practical Example – Local Food at the Model Farm Prekmurje

Prekmurje Model Farm effectively integrates locally produced food into public institutions like schools and kindergartens. As part of an ongoing project that will continue until the end of 2024, the farm donates its produce to supply schools and kindergartens in the region. As a result, vegetables such as lettuce, asparagus, and other seasonal crops grown on the farm are delivered directly to young people. The project aims to provide high-quality food to children and establish sustainable food supply chains. It also supports the local economy. Local, sustainable food supply plays a vital role in improving the quality of life in our communities. Projects like the one at Prekmurje Model Farm show that local food can effectively become a regular part of the daily diet in public institutions.
