At the Prekmurje Model Farm, meadows provide a natural and relaxed habitat for various animals. Among them are Krškopolje pigs, Mangalica pigs, donkeys, and Podolian cattle. Each of those animals adds unique value to our farm and offers visitors an unforgettable experience.
Krškopolje pigs are renowned for their resilience and adaptability to different weather conditions. They are the only indigenous pig breed remaining in Slovenia. Named after the Krška Valley, where they originated, this breed has spread throughout the country. Despite their growing numbers in recent years, they remain classified as an endangered breed.
On our farm, we care for two Krškopolje pigs named Lili and Pepa. They spend the entire year outdoors in a spacious enclosure equipped with two shelters for protection. They have black fur with a white stripe around their shoulders and tails that curl into a spiral shape. Krškopolje pigs are ideal for organic farming. In addition to contributing to biodiversity, their meat is of exceptional quality and has traditionally been used to make Kranjska sausage.
Mangalica pigs are among the oldest pig breeds in Europe and are known for their distinctive appearance. With a fat content of 65% to 70%, they are among the fattest pig breeds in the world. Mangalicas are calm and friendly animals weighing between 150 and 200 kilograms.
Our farm raises Mangalica pigs, allowing visitors to observe the behaviour and lifestyle of these unique animals.
Podolian cattle are one of the oldest and most resilient cattle breeds. They are particularly known for their ability to thrive in harsh environments, such as steppe regions. Originally from Ukraine, specifically from the Podolia region, they are well-suited to challenging conditions.
At the Prekmurje Model Farm, we have five Podolian cows. They are recognizable by their large horns and their gray coat. The milk from Podolian cattle is highly nutritious and flavorful, suitable for making various dairy products. We recently welcomed four new calves, who are now playing and grazing with the other cattle in our meadows.
Donkeys are intelligent animals known for their loyalty, perseverance, and patience. On our farm, Tončka, Taja, and Lars hold special places. Their playfulness and curiosity bring joy to visitors. Tončka is our wise and experienced mother, Taja is her lively and playful daughter, and Lars is the adorable young foal. They enjoy interacting with people and are always happy to be petted. We warmly invite you to visit us, experience the beauty of our farm, and connect with our affectionate animals.
