Aquaponics is one of the most innovative methods enabling sustainable and efficient food production. This method combines fish farming (aquaculture) and soil-less plant cultivation (hydroponics). This circular system creates a harmonious coexistence between fish and plants, where each component contributes to the productivity and health of the other.
An aquaponic system is circular, with water continuously circulating between the fish and the plants. Once the water is in the system, it does not need to be changed because the plants purify it. The principle is based on fish-producing waste (ammonia). Their waste is then broken down by bacteria into nitrates. In the next step, the water travels to the plants and provides them with nutrients in the form of nitrogen. Thus, the plants purify the water, allowing the fish to live in a healthy environment. The fish, in turn, provide essential nutrients crucial for the growth and development of the plants.
At the Prekmurje Model Farm, we follow innovative approaches and have established an aquaponic system that presents an excellent example of this technology in practice. Water from the tank, where the “Tilapia” fish are currently kept, is transported through pipes to the greenhouse. We primarily cultivate lettuce. In the greenhouse, the system distributes water to each column individually. Therefore, the plants do not grow in soil, making them less exposed to pests. This reduces the need for pesticide use. Since the plants are in the greenhouse, we can produce them year-round. With aquaponics, we have ensured a sustainable farming model that is not only environmentally friendly but also efficient in terms of space and water use.
Aquaponics offers numerous advantages:
The future of agriculture will undoubtedly include aquaponics, as this method offers a sustainable solution to modern problems. The Prekmurje Model Farm serves as a good example of how modern technology can help preserve our planet. We believe that by spreading such innovative practices, we can inspire other farmers and individuals to adopt sustainable solutions that will contribute to a healthier future for all.
